This is my live keynote speech delivered at the Safeguard 2019 Conference.  The theme of the conference was Dare to Disrupt.  That was an idea which I respectfully disagreed with and explained why in the opening keynote when I encouraged the audience, and you, to go disrupt yourself.

Hey, it’s Andrew, and this is Safety on Tap.

Since you’re listening in, you must be a leader wanting to grow yourself and drastically improve health and safety along the way.  Welcome to you, you’re in the right place.  If this is your first time listening in, thanks for joining us, and well done for trying something different to improve! And of course, welcome back to all of you wonderful regular listeners.

The Safeguard Conference, held in Auckland New Zealand each year, is the largest health and safety conference in the Southern Hemisphere.  I was invited to deliver the opening keynote address.  So I told everyone to go disrupt themselves.

And I wanted you to as well:

That was a high-octane presentation listening back to it, I had to re-listen to it more than once!

What did you think? Were there a few threads of gold in there?

What I was most pleased by afterward was the conversations I got to have with people in the room – for whom one or other part of that keynote really hit the mark – and provided them with some ideas, inspiration, or motivation to take action, to change their professional practice for the better – and I hope you do too.

I must also acknowledge that I desperately miss the opportunity to get into actual rooms, with people like you, to share in these learning experiences in the flesh, in real-time.  My invitation back to Safeguard 2020 was scuttled, but I can’t wait to get back to NZ and to many more events so we can do some awesome learning and connection together.  I hope you are well, safe, and doing the best you can under the circumstances.  I look forward to the day when you and I can meet, together, to have a laugh and some interesting dialogue.

Thanks so much for listening.  Until next time, what’s the one thing you’ll do to take positive, effective, or rewarding action, to grow yourself, and drastically improve health and safety along the way?

You’ve probably heard me talk about learning teams, and might be wondering what’s that all about. Learning teams are an increasingly popular practical activity to help your organisation to learn better, in order to improve performance.

It’s not an investigation, it’s not a risk assessment, and it’s not a committee meeting – but a learning team approach can help to learn from the past, to anticipate the future, and to engage effectively with people all over your organisation or supply chain.

There’s not one way to do learning teams but some critical principles which will enable you to facilitate better learning whatever your situation.

I’ve created a few short videos which explain What is a learning team? If you’re interested visit safetyontap.com/what
